Anchors (or alternatively, Reasons Why I’m An Oblivious Idiot)
So it only took me like months of staring at gifs of Stiles treading water, keeping Derek from drifting away or drowning in the swimming pool, but.
Guys.
Guys, he is literally Derek’s anchor.
I can’t anymore with this ship.
★ sleep, sweet soul ★: Girls like boys who like boys. Apparently.
This has kind of been stressing me out a lot.
Because, you know, there was that article with Jeff saying that there was definitely hints at Stiles being bisexual, and that made me really really happy - but then there was also that part where he commented on the Derek/Stiles relationship, about him not knowing why ‘girls like boys who like boys’.
And I just don’t get it.
Because it’s not about that, at all.
Want to know who I ship on Teen Wolf? Derek and Stiles. Allison and Scott. Jackson and Lydia. (And I can feel the possibility of Erica and Boyd creeping up on me, they were adorable!)
Guess how many of those pairs are boy/boy? One.
After last week’s episode - after Allison was willing to put both Scott and his mother in death’s way, after siding with her grandfather and crossing so many lines of moral ambiguity - shipping Allison and Scott is crazy! But I do anyway, because they have that spark (something akin to fate, like Scott said) which keeps me hoping and wishing that they’ll figure a way to work things out and be together in the end.
After last season - after Jackson has literally killed people, (to death!), threatened Lydia, and has shown himself to be so incredibly emotionally unstable - shipping Jackson and Lydia is crazy. But I do anyway, because Holland and Colton are such insanely great dramatic actors that the height of emotion in Jackson and Lydia’s relationship is so, so, compelling. The tragedy of their love is so beautifully acted without being over the top that I can’t help but be invested in their relationship.
Derek and Stiles, though. Throughout the seasons, we’ve seen how they complement each other, how they push each other to be better. They have witty banter, they have great chemistry, they argue, they fight, and they have enough common ground and differences to make their relationship interesting.
Derek and Stiles are my OTP because after all that’s happened, Derek and Stiles being together is actually the only ship I ship that is not crazy. It’s the only pair of people that I can actually see coming together romantically in a reasonable, true-to-life way. (Erm, barring the whole werewolf thing, that is).
Yeah, Derek and Stiles might be my OTP. But that is not because they are both boys, it’s because they have the best chemistry.
Girls don’t ship Sterek because they’re two boys. Girls (and guys, mind you) ship Sterek because they’re the two characters with the best chemistry.
And for that, I am disappointed on behalf of all the fans. All the people who wrote pages and pages analyzing both Stiles’ and Derek’s characters. All the fans that put real thought and concern about any kind of possible relationship, and the problems that come with it, that Stiles and Derek might have with each other.
I remember reading pages and pages of analysis on just the introduction sequence, and how that sets up Stiles’ and Derek’s characters as complementary and not. I’ve read essays on the natural elements running throughout Teen Wolf, and what that means for Derek and Stiles’ relationship. I’ve read interesting theories about how visually, Derek and Stiles are set up as opposites and parallels, and how the first time the Teen Wolf fandom is ever introduced to Derek Hale is through Stiles Stilinski. I’ve read concerns and questions about both Derek’s and Stiles’ pasts and families. What Derek’s concerns about Kate might mean for a future relationship with anyone. What Stiles’ own thoughts about himself say about whether he can be his own person and keep his own identity in a relationship.
And the all the art and fiction that explores these problems, that work through these problems in a realistic, funny, (sometimes fluffy, sometimes sexy) way. That’s what we all want to see! That’s what anyone wants to see in a relationship between two people - let us see them grow, develop, have problems, make mistakes, learn from them, love, laugh, fight, bicker…. everything and anything that every relationship consists of.
If you take even just a few minutes to go through what fans have had to say about Derek and Stiles, you’ll see why I’m so disappointed that apparently it’s been decided that we like Sterek because they’re boys liking boys.
Because it’s so much more than that.
I sure hope Jeff sees this!
I agree with everything said in this.
But I also want to point out that I believe the interviewer was basically asking him his thoughts on yaoi in that part of the article. They were angling for the “why girls do slash” thing, and Jeff, precious little boo that he is, was saying he doesn’t know. And that’s a better answer than, say, Ogi Ogas ever came to. (And if you don’t know the Ogi Ogas story, you should. It’s at once sad, hilarious and infuriating.)
But why do viewers, mostly young females, want to see these seemingly straight same-sex characters together?
“I’ll admit this is a bit out of reach of my understanding, even as a gay man. I’m also not sure they may see the characters as perfectly ‘straight,’” he explains. “We’ve certainly made some hints to the possibility of Stiles being bisexual. As to the psychology of why ‘girls like boys who like boys,’ I haven’t asked enough questions or heard enough to really understand the psychology behind it. I know of certain relationships such Holmes and Watson that might have a kernel of truth to them within the actual writing, but then others I’m less sure about. Like what’s called ‘Wincest,’ a romantic relationship between the Winchester brothers on Supernatural.”
The leading question is kind of poking him for answers he doesn’t have. And the very first part of his answer is that perhaps the fans just don’t think they are straight characters in the first place - which is basically that we, as fans, question the heteronormative assumptions of the industry and dude, that he frames it like that, that’s kind of a big deal in a good way. He was asked, however, why straight girls are slashing their hearts out, and his answer is basically “I am not informed enough to tell you but some of these couples are obviously at least hinted at in the text”.
Note that this part of the interview is not Sterek specific. I don’t think Jeff is the one who thinks that slash is a “girls who like boys who like boys” thing, necessarily or exclusively, but it’s the way the question was framed. And I’m fairly certain that he doesn’t think Sterek in particular is just about that. A lot of the tweets he’s getting are from queer fans. He knows, at least, that this is about more than porn or fethisization or whatever kids call slash these days when they want to be mean.
^ This is a super important point!

The song playing when Stiles scored a goal.
Woodkid - Run Boy Run
Tomorrow is another day
And you won’t have to hide away
You’ll be a man, boy
But for now it’s time to run, it’s time to run(Incidentally, I made a post back in June saying this song made me think of Stiles. AHHH.)
When even the TW soundtrack ties together Derek and Stiles. Iron was the song for Derek’s transformation in Ice Ring and his ensuing fight with Scott. Iron and Run Boy Run’s music videos are two halves of the same story. Don’t come and tell me that the possibility of Sterek is not being slowly build since the beginning.
IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LOVE, JIVE ON.
